Are We There
Each Sharon Van Etten album before Are We There felt like a rather insular creation: the lonely work of an indie singer-songwriter who made music for herself and nobody else. Though this quality still colors several songs ("Our Love" and "Nothing Will Change" are but two examples), the bulk of her fourth full-length finds Van Etten implicitly embracing her role as performer -- and as the willing object of the listener's attention. This really becomes apparent on the album's more soul-infused tunes, including "Every Time The Sun Comes Up," "Break Me" and the horn-laced "Tarifa."
